Abstract
543,011. Attachments for screwing and tapping. CHAPMAN, H. H., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Nov. 21, 1940, No. 16721. [Class 83 (iii)] An attachment for securing accurate pitch in threading comprises a shank 18 having a threaded portion 12 of the same pitch as that to be cut, on which a flanged sleeve 13 is screwed. A shell tap 16 is splined at 17 on an unthreaded extension 14 of the shank. In screwing the tap is replaced by chasers 22 screwed and dowelled in slots in a collar 21. As arranged for use in a capstan lathe, the attachment is mounted in a holder 31 in the turret and the sleeve 13 is rotated with the work by a rod 33 entering the hole 19 in the flange. The rod is pivoted between lugs 34 on a bracket 36 sliding on bars 39 secured to one of the chuck jaws. The boss of the rod projects through a slot in the bracket and has a cam end that clamps the bracket in position when the rod is turned into the operative position shown. For tapping &c. non-rotating work the shank 18 is held in a drill spindle and the sleeve 13 is anchored by a rod fixed to the machine table. The thread on the part 12 though of the same pitch as the tap is in this case of opposite hand.
