Abstract
542,957. Winding wire &c. LLOYD, H. J., and RICHARDS, S. H. April 2, 1940, No. 5919. [Class 120 (ii)] The speed of rotation of the spool of a wire or like spooling machine is varied during spooling so that the wire is wound at a constant tension by driving the spool-carrying shaft through a differential gear comprising a member rotated at a constant speed, a second member coupled to the spoolcarrying shaft, and a third member fast with a fly wheel having an angular momentum substantially equal to that of the spool when fully wound at the speed of winding. As shown the members of the gear are in axial alignment, a gear 2 on the shaft carrying the spool 6 engaging gears 1a in the casing 1 driven by a pulley 8 at a constant speed and the gears 1a engaging a gear 3 on the shaft of the fly wheel 7. The tendency to increase of tension in the wire as the spool 6 increases in diameter results in a momentary reduction of speed with a corresponding acceleration of the fly wheel which slows down the spool and maintains a constant tension in the wire.
