Abstract

594,540. Winding webs. UNITED WIRE WORKS, Ltd., and GREEN, W. D. T. Sept. 29, 1944, No. 18676. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Groups VIII, IX and XXXV] In winding apparatus for thread, wire, ribbon &c., the winding spindle 10 is driven by means of a permanent magnet clutch or coupling comprising one or more rotatable permanent magnets 7, means for rotating the same, and a disc 12 of conducting metal arranged to drive the winding spindle and mounted with its face in close proximity to the active pole faces of the magnets. The rotor spindle 1 is driven by a belt 30 from a prime mover and, through a belt 29, drives a pulley 27 to feed the thread &c. 24 at uniform speed. The bobbin 20 gripped between a washer 21, bearing against a ball race for the winding spindle, ,and a nut 22 screwed on to the spindle, is rotated by the disc 12, the wire being traversed by a guide 23. A flange 25 on a screwed sleeve 14 may be rotated to cause the spindle 10 and-hence the disc 12 to move nearer to or further from the magnet rotor to vary the torque to suit the thread &c. being wound.
