[Also in Groups VIII, IX and XXXV] A device for winding ribbon, film &c. comprising a driven spindle 1 and a spool holder, roller &c. 5 rotated by the spindle through a magnetic slip clutch comprising a permanent magnet of two or more poles 2 and a soft iron armature 3 surrounding the magnet, is characterised in that the armature 3 is provided with a liner 6 made of electrically conductive but non-magnetic material such as copper or aluminium. These materials are stated to preserve a linear relationship between torque and slip and so effect substantially constant tension in the material being wound.
