Abstract

796,998. Electromagnetic couplings. SCHMID, W. K. Sept. 2, 1955, No. 25314/55. Addition to 748,255. Class 35. An electromagnetic coupling has a driven outer member 1, and an inner armature member 6, the coupling being controlled by periodically interrupting the current exciting the poles 4 of the outer member, or the current passing through the armature winding. The duration of the current pulses is adjusted by moving the brush 18 along the surface of a taper-contact drum 12. As shown, the exciting poles and the armature are connected in series, but they may, be in parallel. For greater sensitivity of control, the pole windings may be fed from an exciter which is fed with current impulses from a battery connected in series with the impulse transmitter. If desired, the intermediate exciter may be disconnected at high rates of slip. For greater sensitivity two exciters may be used in tandem. It is described how the principle may be applied to a lathe or vehicle drive. The armature may be commutated or polyphase, and the coupling gap may contain magnetic liquid.
