Abstract
542,939. Coagulating rubber latex. WALSH, C. L., and NEWMAN, A. A. Aug. 1, 1940, No. 12470. [Class 70] Rubber latex is treated to yield a paste-like product which may be dried and which with water containing ammonia or alkali will reconstitute a latex, but becomes irreversible on trituration and pressing. The latex is mixed with a colloid consisting of pectin or pectates, alginic acid or its salts, gelatinous substances extracted from seaweeds or fibre-producing plants such as laminariae, flax, hemp, sisal, phormium or coconut plants which yield mucilages such as locust bean or those of the order cassiae, amorphalli caselpinae, poncianae &c. and is then coagulated by addition of acetic or formic acid. The paste-like product may be partially-dried. If the latex is allowed to cream before coagulation, the cream may be separated and dried with additional colloid, if necessary to maintain reversibility, and the rubber remaining in the serum may be separated by acidifying, yielding a reversible product.
