Abstract

265,491. Carpmael, W., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 1, 1926. Benzyl cellulose. - Crude benzyl cellulose is purified by mixing or malaxating with a watersoluble salt such as common salt or other alkali or alkaline earth salt, so as to convert the original gummy material into a moist friable mass; thereupon the benzyl alcohol and benzyl chloride are extracted by a suitable solvent such as benzene, alcohol or acetone, in one or several stages, and the extracted product is finally washed with water. Alternatively, a part only of the impurities may be extracted before washing with water, the remainder being removed after washing with water.
