Abstract
311,945. Gratze, E. V. Hayes-, (Leyst, C.). May 21, 1928. Pulp, preparation of.-Paper pulp is produced from straw, esparto grass or the like by decomposing the material by cooking in lime and water to free the cellulose and then milling or grinding to a flour-like consistency, or alternatively milling or grinding the material to a flour-like consistency and then freeing the product from glutinous, resinous, silicious, pectinous and other impurities by cooking in lime and water. The decomposition is carried out by cooking in an open boiler with excess of water and about 30 per cent of lime for about six or eight hours. The material is then washed and ground either before or after drying. In the alternative process the grinding precedes the cooking. As a preliminary the raw material may be exposed in a moist or wet condition to a temperature of 30‹ C. for from three to six days, with or without a small proportion of alkali, to assist the development of the bacillus butyricus and the elimination of the pectin impurities.
