364,708. Moulding pulp. AKT.-GES. FœR HALBZELLSTOFF-INDUSTRIE, 4, Aeschenvorstadt, Basle, Switzerland. Oct. 18, 1930, No. 31314. Convention date, Aug. 29. [Class 87 (ii).] Coarsely disintegrated fibrous material such as wood, bamboo, sugar-cane, cotton stalks, reeds, grasses and straw is agitated in water by rotating cutting members and freed from incrustations and impurities and the fibres separated, discolouration of the material by liberated impurities being prevented by keeping the temperature below 80‹ C. Substances such as lime, soda or sodium sulphate which assist the mechanical disintegration may be added. The product is suitable for further treatment to obtain cellulose, paper pulp, cardboard, millboard, insulating plates, wall plates, building plates and the like. A suitable apparatus for effecting the disintegration comprises a drum a having radial cutting arms d and a water jacket e. A shaft b rotates within the drum and carries radial cutting arms c which preferably have straight cutting edges with a reinforced backing, the width of which decreases towards the extremities. The arm g stirs up material which sinks to the bottom. If the heat generated by friction is insufficient, the water may be preheated, or a steam pipe may be used ; the temperature is prevented from rising above 80‹ C. by means of the cooling jacket e.
