Abstract

542,284. Inserting lasts into shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation.). June 29, 1940, No. 11038: [Class 17 (i)] A machine for forcing a last into a shoe has a pivoted support for the heel end of the shoe, a pivoted abutment for engaging the rear end of the last and forcing it into the shoe and a shoe-horn withdrawn as the last enters. The shoe heel is supported on a rubber pad 10 yieldable about a pivot 16 against a spring 18 maintained central by a pin 21. A heel-end abutment 12 is pivoted to a slide 32 actuated by a lever 56 connected to a treadle 38, the lever being urged upwardly by a spring 62. A shoe horn 14 is suspended by a strap 36 secured to the upper end of a segment 70 pivoted at 68 and adjustably secured to a lever 72 connected by a link 82 with the lever 56. The lever 56 is supported by a link 54 which may be connected to the lever at any of the holes 88 to vary the effective length of the lever. The lower end of the link 82 is similarly adjustable to enable the angle of movement of the sector to be adjusted. The shoe-horn is withdrawn as the last enters the shoe to prevent crumpling of the upper.
