Abstract
332,522. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Bates, A. Jan. 22, 1929. Lasting and pulling-over. - In conforming an upper to the forepart of a last, a yielding pad is caused to press against a substantial proportion of the total area of the upper which lies between the toe portion and the waist of the shoe, to prevent the upper being drawn away from the hollow portion of the last forepart rearward of the toe. As applied to the toe moulding machine described in Specification 328,193, for dealing with a loose upper for a welted shoe, the toe rest carrier 1 is fitted with a casing 3 lined with an inflatable pad 5. The casing is supported at its forward end on a pin 13 in a lug loosely mounted on a pin 17, this arrangement providing a universal joint, and at its rear end by an adjustable ball-ended member 19. Springs 21 centralize the casing when no last is present. The inflatable bag may overlie the toe-rest. The bag is inflated by a valve 11 before the wiper advances. to mould the feather line on the upper. After the operation, fine wire staples may be inserted at each end of the tip line and rearward of the ball line. The work may then pass to the machine described in Specification 235,286 for heel seat lasting, and may thereafter be side-lasted. The inflatable pad device may be applied to a bed-lasting machine. Specification 206,438, and 332,563, [Class 17 (ii), Boots and shoes, Construction of], also are referred to.
