Abstract

512,437. Sole-laying machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. March 3, 1938, No. 6666. Convention date, March 4, 1937. Addition to 468,377. [Class 17 (i)] The welt-support described in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of a thin plate member engaging the welt crease under the flexible support, a flexible backing strip secured to the support, which support is divided at its ends into separate blocks, and means for exerting an outward pull on the ends of the device, whereby the portions not in use are bent outwards. The pad box is of the kind described in Specification 431,392, a mask plate 82, adjustable to cover more or less of the pad by a hand-wheel 92, carrying pivots 12, 14 for arms 16, 18 themselves carrying pivots 20, for arms 22 spring-pressed upwardly and carrying gauges 280, 282. At their ends the arms are bored to receive pins 28 carrying blocks 30 each engaged by a flat spring 32 to maintain it upright, and carrying rolls 38, engaging a flexible backing strip 60 to which rubber blocks 58, 62, comprising the welt support, are secured. Each end, of the support is tensioned by a clock spring 64, the centre block being carried by a slide 74 formed with a slot 76 co-operating with a pin 78 to limit the movements of the slide. At the ends of the support, between it and the welt, is a flat plate 54 secured to a bracket 40 turning about a pin 36 under the pull of a spring 46, the bracket being steadied by a flange engaging a slot 44. The shoe gauges and the rolls 38 are adjusted about the pivots 12, 14 by links 100, 102 pivoted to a bar 80 itself pivoted to a lever 106 adjustable by a thumb nut 120. In operating, this adjustment having been made, the toe of a shoe is placed against the toe part of the member 58 and pushed forward, the flexible end portions of the welt support being pulled around the rolls 38 until further movement of the shoe is stopped by the gauges.
