Abstract
468,377. Boot - making machines. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1936, No. 98. Convention date, Jan. 3, 1935. [Class 17 (i)] Sole-laying.-Relates to apparatus of the kind described in Specification 431,392, and consists in means for holding down the sole margin or welt. The hold-down comprises a band 26 of firm rubber with wedge-shaped portions 28 of softer rubber vulcanized therein to allow heightwise bending of the band. The hold-down is carried on the gauge-carrying arms 30, 32 described in the prior Specification, a leaf spring 50, secured to one of the arms by a screw and slot, supporting a housing 48 pivotally carrying metal strips 42 secured to the band. The extreme toe end of the band is thin and contacts with a plate 56 adjustable, for varying the shape of the toe end, by an eccentrically mounted rectangular cam maintained in adjusted position by a detent 66 co-operating with notches 64. The rear ends of the band are pivoted to links 70 which slide loosely through holes in blocks pivoted to extensions of the arms 30, 32. Springs 74 threaded over the links urge the ends of the band inwardly, and weaker springs 80 assist the leaf spring 50 in supporting the band. The welt support is engaged by a rubber presser 88 mounted in a holder 90 pivoted at 92 to the pressure head 14, yield being allowed by a spring 104. The member 92 is adjustable angularly, its forward end being supported by a link 96 formed with notches, any one of which may engage a pin 100 supported by the head 14. The toe pad 16 can yield upwardly against a spring 20.
