Be it known that I, Fnizoenlo E..BER- TRANU, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of lllassachusetts, have invented' certain Improvements in Heel Attaching, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is .a specification. like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to the manufacture of shoes and more particularly to the clamping of heels to shoes and to the applying of coverings to the breasts of heels,
In attaching wood heels to shoes it is usual. after the heel seat of the shoe has been fitted to the heel to be attached, to apply a coating of suitable adhesive to the heel seat of the shoe or to that of the heel or to both and. after correctly positioning the heel with respect to the shoe. to clamp the heel to the shoe, the pressure being applied directly to the heel and to the shoe through the last on which it is mounted. After the adhesive has set so that the shoe may he further operated upon, the heel breast covering ordinarily consisting of a split portion of the sole, is brought into position. with a film of adhesive between it and the heel breast. and is bound to the heel by means of a band of suitable material, such as a piece of tape. The conformation of the clamps ordinarily used to clamp wood heels to shoes is such as to interfere with the convenient binding in place of the breast covering while its adhesive sets. Hence the practice has been to make two distinct operations of the heel attaching and the applying of breast covering.
It is an object of the present invention so to clamp the breast covering to the breast of a wood heel as to permit the performance of this operation immediately after the clamping of the heel to the heel seat of a shoe. Thus the films of adhesive between the heel and the shoe and between the heel breast covering and the breast of the heel will set simultaneously with a resulting saving in time as compared to the usual practice prior to this invention.

Considered from this aspect, features of the invention include improved means, exemplified as a heel cuphaving rubber rolls, arranged to apply pressure to the contour surface of a heel without damage 'to the covering thereof, and an improved tread plate, illustrated as pivotally and adjustab y carried by the heel cup, to apply pressure to the toplift of the heel.
Another feature of the invention consists of an improved heel breast covering clamp comprising a pressure applying element of yieldable or flexible material, such as a sheet of rubber. together with means for supporting said element approximately to conform to the curve of a heel breast whereby said element may be utilized. when pressure is suitably applied thereto. to clamp the breast covering to the breasts of heels. 'hile this breast clamp may advantageously he used in combination with a suitablehee'l clamp, and the present invention contemplates such use, it should be distinctly under-' stood that the breast clamp is capable of use separately from a heel clamp. if desired or expedient. and that such is also within the contemplation of the invention,
A further feature of the invention consists of improved means for bringing a heel breast engaging member into contact with a heel breast and for applying clamping pressure thereto.
In another aspect the invention contemplates the utilization of sufficient pressure while clamping a heel to the heel seat of a shoe to cause the heel to mold the heel seat of the shoe whereby a close fit of the heel to the upper of the shoe is insured. By suitably distributing the clamping )ressure over the different arts of a woo heel, while the shoe to w rich the heel is being attached is supported on its last. such a molding pressure may be applied without damage to the heel and is advantageous both as regards the appearance of the shoe and the firmness of the attachment of the heel to the shoe.

As shown in Fig. 1, a series of heel clamps 10 of the present invention may be supported upon a bench 12 of any suitable form. Preferably, a suflicient number of the clamps is utilized such that the operative may work from one end to the other of the series, clamping a heel to a shoe by each clamp until, by the time he reaches the end of the series, the film of adhesive between the heel and the shoe in the first clamp will have set to such an extent that the shoe can be removed safely from the clamp which may then be utilized to clamp a heel to another shoe. Thus, after his first progression along the line of clamps the operative, upon clamping a heel to a shoe with each clamp, finds the shoe on the next clamp in such condition that it may be removed and that clamp again utilized. In practice the number of clamps necessary that the series may be so utilized will vary somewhat with the skill and speed of the operative and with the character of adhesive used. As a practical proposition it has been found that with the clamps of the form shown in Fig. 1, from twenty-four to forty-eight are desirable.
Each clamp, as shown, is provided with a jack consisting of a standard or sleeve 14 fastened to the bench in any suitable manner and carrying, for limited sliding movement, a plunger 16 having at its upper end a last pin or spindle 18. the latter being preferably bent forward somewhat for a reason which will be hereinafter explained. Pluner 16 is normally held in its upper position by a spring 20 housed within sleeve 14, movement of the plunger under the influence of the spring being limited as by a. screw 22 threaded in the sleeve and entering an elongated cavity 24 in the' plunger 16. Fulcrumed to each standard 1i near its base is a hand lever 26 to which is attached, at a short distance from its fulcrum, a pair of rods 28 each of which is formed intermediate its length with a coil 30 and is pivoted at its upper end to one of a pair of hooks 32 carried b a heel cup 34 Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 to 4, this heel cup, as shown, is provided at its rear with a pair of pins 36 suitably supported thereby and each carrying a roll 38 of rubber or other soft and yieldable material. These two rolls are arranged with their axes converging, in the illustrated form approximately at right angles to one another, and are so positioned that they may engage the rear portion of the contour surface of a heel on opposite sides of the median plane thereof.
The heel on 34 is illustrated as provided with a pair 0 upwardly extending arms 40 each provided with a series of holes, the holes in the two arms being in alinement to receive a pin 42 which acts as a pivotal support for a tread plate 44-, the latter being provided with a series of holes i6 through any one of which pin 42 may be passed. It is apparent that means is thus provided for adjusting the tread late relatively to the heel cup both in the irection of the height of a heel and in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shoe to which the heel is to be attached. Also, since the tread plate is carried by pin 42 it is capable of adjustment to any position which may be necessarv or; account of variations in the size and shape of different heels to be attached. Moreover, since the heel cup is pivotally connected to rods 28, it may swing with respect thereto to conform to the pitch of different heels.
The tread plate 4-4 is preferably made of a length less than the length of the toplifts of the heels to be attached and is provided at the rear with a lip 48 arranged to engage the contour surface of the toplift and insure that the tread plate shall not extend over the forward portion thereof.
At such time as any of the heel cups are not in clamping relation to the heel of a shoe. rods 28 may conveniently be swung rearwardly and coils 30 may be hooked over a suitable portion of the bench, such as the iiange50 of Fig. 1, this forming a convenient mode of holding the heel cups and rods 28 in such position that they will be out of the way of the operative and at the same time in an easily accessible position.
To assist in holding the heel cups in a position convenient to the operative at such times as they are not in use, they may be provided with lugs 52 somewhat to the rear of the hooks 32 and arranged to engage rods 28 and limit the swinging movement of the heel cups. Since the center of gravity of each heel cup is to the rear of its hooks 32, the heel cups naturally come to rest in the position shown in Fig. 1.
In operation, a last on which is mounted a shoe to which a heel is to be attached is laced upon the pin 18. Before the adhesive 13 applied the heel seat of the shoe is trimmed to fit the concavity of the heel which 1s to be attached and after the coating of adhesive has been applied to the heel seat of the shoe and of the heel, the heel is positioned in proper relation to the heel seat of the shoe and the heel cup swung forward so that its rolls 38 engage with the contour surface of the. heel. The tread plate having been properly adjusted, it is brought into engagement with the toplift of the heel, its lip 48 contacting with the contour surface of the toplift to position it with respect thereto. Next the lever 26 is swung downward tensioning the rods 28' so that the heel cup applies a clamping pressure to the heel. The position to which the lever 26 is swung is such that the lever 26 and the rods 28 act as a toggle couple to hold the heel cup in clamping position as shown in Fig. 5.' It may be here noted that the inclination of the last pin 18 is such that the pressure applied to the heel by the heel cup has a small component in a direction towards the forepart of the shoe, this being of material assistance in properly positioning the heel upon the heel seat of the shoe and insuring that the edge of the heel properly contacts with the shoulders formed in the sole of the shoe at the front of the heel seat. The pressure with which the heel is thus clamped to the shoe may advantageously be great enough to cause the heel to mold the heel seat of the shoe, thus compensating for such irregularities as may exist in the heel seat due to the roughness of the heel seat fitting operation and insuring a close fit between the .upper edge of the heel and the upper of the shoe. 'ith the clamping pressure well distributed over the different parts of the heel such a molding pressure may be applied without damage to the heel, the yielding nature of the rolls 38 being such as to enable them to distribute that portion of the pressure which they apply over a substantial area. and their form and mounting permitting them to move over the covered surface of the heel as they are brought into position without damage thereto.
Referring now to Figs. 5 to 8. the heel cup thereof. while generally similar to Figs. 1 to 4. is provided with a single upstanding arm 60 provided with a dove-tailed slot in which is mounted for sliding movement a carrier 62 (see Fig. 7) by which'is pivotally supported a tread plate 64 provide at its rear with a lip 66. The carrier 62 may be retained in any one of several positions by means of a pin or other suitable retaining member 68 passing through the arm 60 and lnto one of a series of holes 70 formed in the carrier 62. Fulcrumed to the arm 60, as at 72, is a lever 74 provided with a coil spring 7 5 the tension of which tends to throw it upwardly into the position of Fig. 7. Lever 74 consists, as shown in Fig. 7 of two parallel arms, one of which is provided with a projection arranged to engage a pin 77 carried by arm 60 "th limit the upward movement of the lever. This lever may conveniently be provided with a handle portion 76. Fulcrumed to lever 74 at 78 is a second lever 80 to the lower end of which is connected a. pressure transmitting member consisting of a rod 82 (see Fig. 6) on which is pivotally mounted a pair of arms 84 each of which supports a U-shaped rod 86. These two rods 86 form a pair of supports over which is loosely stretched a pressure applyin member consisting of a piece of rubber tubing 88. Since the rods 86 conform approximately to the curvature of the breast of :1 Louis heel it will be seen that they support the rubber 88 in such position that with slight pressure it will conform to the curvature of the breast of the heel over its entire height. A stop illustrated as a. screw 91 is carried by lever.

A latch may conveniently be carried by the heel cup so arranged as to be capable of retaining lever 74 in either the inoperative position of Fig. 7 or in the pressure applying position of Fig. 5. In the illustrated emiodiment of the invention this "omprises a lever 90 fulcrumed on a pin 92 carrhd by the heel cup and provided with a spring 94 tending to hold it in the position shown in Fi 7. Lever 90 is provided with an adjustab e detent 96 illustrated as a screw and arranged to engage the surface 98 of lever 74 to hold the latter in the. position of Fig. 7 or to engage the surface 100 thereof to hold the lever in the position of Fig. 5. This latch may be released merely by swinging the lever a short distance in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 7.
In using this lJIPflSL clamp. the latter is retained in inoperative )osition as indicated in Fig. 7 during the clamping of the heel to the shoe. After this operation is completed. the operative applies the adhesive which is to hold the heel covering to the breast of the heel. and manually presses the breast covering into place. Next the end of the breast covering is tucked under the toplift of the heel this being readily done by reason of the fact that the tread plate does not extend over the forward portion of the toplift. The front edge of the toplift may be easily lifted a little with any suitable flat instrument such as a screw driver and the edge of the breast covering tucked in. Then. releasing the latch, the operative swings the lever 74 downward into the position of Fig. 6, the construction being such that the rubber 88 moves into position without dragging over the breast covering or in any way interfering therewith. At this time it may be noted that the rubber S8 of the breast clamp is in breast engaging position but no substantial amount of pressure is being applied. Next the operative swings lever 80 forward. This applies a yielding pressure sufficient to clamp the breast covering in place. It may be noted at this time that the reactive forces caused by the pressure of. the rubber against the breast of the heel and acting upon arms 84 carried by the lever 80 are such as to tend to swing the lever 80 in the direction of the stop 91 so that no latch is required to hold the different parts in pressure applying position.
In releasing the breast clamp, lever 80 should first be swung to the position of Fig. t). Then. if a slight pressure is applied to lever T1, the latch may easily be released, whereupon lever 74 will swing to inoperative position under the influence of spring 75 and will be there retained by the latch. After this the heel cup may be released by bearing upward on lever 26 and swung to a position corresponding to that of Fig. 1. after which the last and shoe may be removed from the jack.

1. A heel cup constructed. and formed to be used to clamp a heel toa shoe and having a heel engaging roll.

In a device of the class described. in combination. a work support. a clamping head, spaced and linked toggle members mounted on opposite sides of the support and carrying the head. a handle to move the knuckles of the toggle members to move the head to and from clamping position. and a bench to carry the work support and toggle members and having a projecting portion to engage the toggle members in their lnoperative position.

In a device of the class described, in combination, a support, a clamping head movable toward and from the support and formed with relatively adjustable work-engaging members, and means comprising spaced guiding members on opposite sides of the support to move the head to effect a clamping action co-operatively with the support.
8. A heel cup constructed and arranged to clamp a heel to a shoe and provided with a pair of rolls arranged respectively to engage the rear portion of a heel on opposite sides of its median plane for applying pressure thereto".
9. A heel cup constructed and arranged to clamp a heel to a shoe and provided with roller means having converging heel engaging surfaces for applying pressure to the contour surfaces of heels.
10. A clamp to press a heel against the heel seat of a shoe and having a rubber-surface arranged to contact with the contour surface of a heel over spaced areas on opposite sides of its median plane.
11. A heel clamp having a heel cup constructed and arranged to clamp a heel to a shoe and provided with roller means having heel engaging surfaces converging towards the rear of the heel to be clamped.
12. A heel clamp comprising a supporLa heel cup provided with a roll arranged to engage the rear portion of a heelto be clamped to the heel seat of a shoe carried by said support. and means operable to cause relative movement of said'support and said heel cup to clamp the heel to the heel seatof the shoe.
13. A heel clamp comprising a support, a. heel cup provided with roller means arranged to engage therear portion of a heel on both sides of its median plane, and means operable to cause relative movement of said support and said heel cup to clamp. the heel to the heel scat of a shoe carried by said support.
11. A heel clamp comprising a support. a heel cup provided with roller means having curved surfaces with their respective heel engaging portions converging towards the rear. and means operable to cause relative movement of said support and said heel cup to clamp a heel to the heel seat of a shoe carried by said support.
15. A heel clamp comprising a jack for supporting a last with a shoe mounted thereon. a heel cup provided with a roll having a surface of yielding material arranged to engage the rear portion of a heel to be clamped to the heel seat of the shoe, and means operable to cause relative movement of the jack and the heel cup to clamp the heel to the heel seat of the shoe.
16. A heel clamp comprising a jack for supporting a last with a shoe mounted thereon. a heel cup provided with a rubber roll arranged to engage the rear portion of a heel to be clamped to the heel seat of the shoe, and means operable to cause relative movement of the arch and the heel cup to clamp the heel to tl lG heel seat of the shoe.

A heel clamp comprising a. jack for supporting a last with a shoe mounted thereon. a heel cup provided with a pair of rolls angularly arranged to engage the rear portion of the heel on both sides of its median plane. and means operable to cause relative movement of the jack and the heel cup to clamp the heel to the heel seat of the shoe.

A device to clamp a heel to a shoe comprising, in combination, a support for a shoe, spaced links mounted on opposite sides of said support, a head mounted on said links and carried thereby from an inactive position to active position above a heel placed on the heel seat of a shoe on the support. means to engage the tread surface of the heel, and means to engage another surface of the heel. both of said means being carried by the head and one of said means being constructed and arranged to be bodily adjusted relatively to the other said means to engage heels of different sizes.
19. A heel clamp comprising a jack for supporting a last with a shoe mounted thereon. a heel cup provided with roller means of yielding material arranged to engage the rear portion of a heel on both sides of its median plane. and means operable to move the heel cup relatively to the jack to clamp the heel to the heel seat of a shoe mounted on a last carried by the jack.
20. A heel clamp comprising a jack. a heel cup arranged to engage the heel of a shoe mounted on a last carried by said jack. and means relatively to move said jack and said heel cup to clamp the heel to the shoe, all so arranged that said movement has a component in a direction tending to move the heel forwardly on the shoe.
21. A heel n-ess comprising a bench, a jack supported by said bench, a heel cup in operative relation to said jack, :1 rod connected to -said heel cup and provided with means arranger] to co-operate with a portion of said bench to limit movement of said rod while said heel cup is in inoperative position. and means arranged to cause longitudinal movement of said rod to force said hccl cup into clamping relation to the heel of a shoe supported by said jack.

A press comprising a bench. a support on said bench, a clamping member in operative relation to said support, a rod connected to said member and provided with a coil arranged to co-operate with a portion of said bench to limit movement of said rod while said member is in inoperative position. and means arranged to cause longitudinal movement of said rod to force said member into clamping relation to the support.

In a clamping device for shoe heels, the combination with a last support, of a clamp carrier pivotally mounted with reference to the last support to swing about the same and including spaced guiding elements, and a clam carried by said elements comprising relatively adjustable surfaces for clamping the bottom and side of the heel.

A heel press comprising a bench, a jack supported by said bench, aheel cup in operative relation to said jack. a rod connected at one end to said heel cup and provided with a coil arranged to co-operate with a portion of said bench to limit movement of said rod while said heel cup is in inoperative position, and a lever pivoted to the other end of said rod and operable to cause longitudinal movement of said rod to force said heel cup into clamping relation to the heel of a shoe supported by said jack.

A heel engaging device comprising, in combination, a carrier member and a treadengaging member, each of said members having a series of holes therethrough, the two series being at right angles in the assembled device, and a in to be placed in registered holes to provide a pivotal mounting at a desired height and lateral position for the 1l5 tread-engaging member.
29. A heel cup provided with an upstanding arm and a tread plate ivotally mounted thereon and adiustable re atively thereto.

A heel clamp provided with a shoe su port and a. heel cup bodily movable re atively to the support and arranged to engage the rear portion of the contour surface of a heel, said heel cup carrying a tread plate adjustable toward and from the body portion of the heel cup to accommodate heels of different hei hts.

A heel c amp provided with a shoe support and a heel cup bodily movable relatively to the support and arranged to engage the rear portion of the contour surface of a heel, said heel cup carrying a pivotally supported tread plate adjustable toward and from the contour surface engaging portion of the heel cup to accommodate heels of different heights and shapes.

A heel cup provided with a pair of upstanding arms, each arm provided with a series of holes, the holes in one arm alining with those in the other arm, a tread plate provided with a series of holes, and a pin arranged to pass through any one of the holes in the tread plate and any pair of holes in the arms, to supgort the tread plate in variable relation to t e arms.
33. A heel clamp having a heel cup, a rod pivoted to the heel cup and by movement of which the heel cup may be moved into clamping relation to a heel, and a stop carried by the heel cup to limit the relative movement of the heel cup and the rod.
34. A heel clamp comprising a support, means to clamp a heel to a shoe carried by said support, and separate means to clamp abreast covering to said heel.
35. A heel clamp comprising a support for a shoe, a heel cup, means to cause relative movement of said support andsaid heel cup to clamp a heel to a shoe carried by said support, and independently operable means to clamp a breast covering to said heel.
36. A heel clamp having a heel cup and independently operable means carried by said heel cup for clamping a breast covering to the breast of a heel.
37. A heel clamp comprising, in combination, a shoe support, means to press a heel against the heel-seat of a shoe supported thereby, and means to clamp a breast covering to the breast of the heel so pressed against the shoe.
38. A heel clamp having a heel cup provided with a roll arranged to engage the rear portion of the contour surface of a heel and a breast clamp carried by said heel cup for clamping a breast covering to the breas of a heel.
39. A heel clamp comprising, in combination, a shoe support, a member movable toward a heel on a shoe supported thereby, means on said member to engage the rear surface of the heel, and means carried by said member to clamp a breast covering to the breast of the heel.
40. A heel breast covering clamp having a pressure applying member comprising a pair of rods shaped to conform approximately to the curvature of a heel breast, and a sheet of yieldable material supported by said rods.
41. A heel breast covering clamp provided with a sheet of rubber arranged to conform to the breast of a heel. rigid means to hold said sheet extended approximately to conform to the breast ofa heel, and means to cause said sheet of rubber to apply a clamping pressure to the breast of the heel.
42. A heel breast covering clamp having a pressure appl ing member comprising a pair of U shape rods and a sheet of rubber supported by said rods.
43. A heel breast covering clamp comprising a movable support, a pair of U shaped rods carried thereby, and a piece of rubber tubing carried by said rods.

A heel clamp havin a heel cup, a heel breast clamp carried tiereby, said heel breast clamp comprising a heel breast engaging member, a lever fulcrumed to said heel cup for moving said breast engaging member into heel breast engaging position, and a second lever fulcrumed to said first named lever and carrying saidheel breast engaging member for causing said heel breast engagin member to apply pressure to the breast o a heel.

A heel clamp com rising a support for a shoe, a heel clamp an a heel breast clamp carried ,by said heel clamp and having a breast covering engaging element and means to cause said element to apply pressure to the breast covering of the heel of a shoe in a direction having components in directions towards the sole of the shoe and towards the breast of the heel, in combination with means independently to operate the two said clamps.
46. A heel clamp having a support for a shoe, a heel cup, means to cause said heel cup to clamp a heel to a shoe carried by said support, a lever carried by said heel cup, a latch to hold said lever in either operative or inoperative position, and a breast covering clamp carried by said lever and operable to clamp a covering to the breast of the shoe on said support.
47. A heel clamp having a heel pressing member, a lever fulcrumed thereto, and a )ressure applying member operated by said ever for clamping a breast covering to the breast of a heel.
-18. A heel clamp having a heel cup, a compound lever fulcrumed thereto. a pressure applying member carried by said compound lever for clamping a breast covering to the breast of a heel, and a latch to hold said lever in clamping position.
49. A clamp member provided with a pressure transmitting member, a pair of arms pivotally carried thereby. a rod carried by each arm. and a sheet of rubber carried by said rods and arranged to apply a clamping pressure to the breast of a heel.
50. That improvement in attaching wood heels to shoes which includes positioning a wood heel in the desired relation to the heel seat of a shoe with a film of adhesive between the heel and the heel seat of the shoe and clamping the heel to the shoe with a pressure which causes the heel to mold the heel seat of the shoe, and thereafter clamping a breast-covering against the breast of the heel with a film of adhesive between the heel breast and the covering, and allowing the two films of adhesive to dry simultaneously under pressure.
51. That improvement in attaching heels to shoes which includes fitting the heel seat of a shoe approximately to the heel seat of a heel to be attached, positioning the heel in the desired relation to the heel seat of the shoe with adhesive between the heel and the heel-scat, clamping the heel to the shoe, clamping a heel-breast covering to the breast of the heel with adhesive between the heel breast and the covering, and allowing the adhesive between the heel and heel seat and between the covering and the heel breast to dry while the heel and the covering are both so clamped.
52. That improvement in attaching heels to shoes which includes positioning a heel in the desired relation to the heel seat of a shoe with a film of adhesive between the heel and the heel seat of the shoe, applying pressure to clamp the heel to the heel seat of the shoe, and thereafter while said pressure is maintained clamping a breast covering to the breast of the heel with a film of adhesive therebetween.
