Sole-levelling. - Relates to waist-levelling apparatus comprising a jack for holding a shoe on its last and a resilient pressing pad arranged to apply shaping pressure rearward of the ball line and consists in the provision on the jack of a shoe supporting member bearing on the top of the last in the hollow behind the toe and along most of the instep. The fore and rear parts of the jack are simultaneously adjustable towards and away from the central line of pressure. The improvements may be applied to machines of the kind described in Specifications 4975/15 and 216,937 modified to effect waist-levelling as described in Specification 264,461. A vertically-reciprocated carriage 120 supports trunnions on a box 124 in which a waistlevelling pad 126 is adjustable longitudinally by a screw 132. The pad is shaped at 128 to press the edges of the sole closely against the upper, with flat surfaces at the front and rear. The jack comprises a rear arm 114 to which is pivoted a last pin 118 urged forwardly by a spring 150, and a fore arm 116 providing an abutment for a shaped rubber pad 138 engaging the last from the rear end of the instep to the hollow at the back of the toe. The pad is straight widthwise of the shoe, so as to serve for both right and left shoes. A rock shaft 154 is linked to the two arms, which are adjusted towards and from the rock shaft by a right and left-handed screw 160. To hold the screw in adjusted position a threaded bore in one of the nuts 162 houses a friction block backed by a spring.
