Abstract
545,533. Sole-laying presses. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Nov. 29, 1940. No. 17047. [Class 17 (i)] Sole-laying presses of the kind described in Specification 408,953 are provided with additional gauging members for a wedge heel between the shoe and sole. The shoe and sole gauges for the toe end are elongated, so that they may be used for a large range of sizes. The rear gauges are carried on a vertical slide and urged upwardly by a spring 50. A clamping nut 54 allows all the rear gauges to be adjusted longitudinally of the shoe. The heel end of the sole is positioned with the aid of a gauge 66 formed with a V-shaped recess for engaging the heel. The wedge heel W is positioned with the aid of side gauges 84, 86 independently adjustable in respect of the sole gauges 80, 82 at the same vicinity, the gauges on the two sides being carried by arms 76, 78 geared together. The arm 76 is adjustable by a screw 94 and opposing spring 92 to cause the gauges to contact with the work at the same time on the two sides of the shoe. The gauges are swung toward and from the shoe by an inclined slot co-operating with a roll. A wedge heel gauge 96 may be advanced and retracted by a screw 102. The gauge is carried on a slide urged upwardly by a spring so that it may yield downwardly as pressure is exerted on the work. A screw 126 adjusts this gauge laterally. The heel end of the shoe has a pair of gauges 140 of substantial height, adjustable laterally by a handle 144 and carried on arms geared together, and actuated by a roll 152 on one of the arms engaging a slot in a slide connected to the swinging frame described m the prior Specification. In a modification, for use when the wedge heel is stapled to the shoe, the rear shoe gauge and the forward wedge heel gauges are omitted and the rear wedge heel gauge is pivoted on a transverse horizontal axis so that it can yield downwardly against a spring.
