Abstract

525,567. Sole-laying &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Feb. 23, 1939, No. 5986. [Class 17 (i)] Relates to means for adjusting the contour of the shoe - engaging surface of a shoe-bottom pressing pad. A base 10 bolted to the machine frame supports abutments 64, 66 each comprising a spindle 74 carrying rollers 76 supporting plates 26, 36 supporting the front and rear parts of the pad, respectively. The abutments are screwthreaded to engage a right, and left hand screw 78, having a hand nut 84 prevented from longitudinal movement, by which the screw and abutments can be moved longitudinally of the screw. A lock nut 90 enables the screw to be turned to move the abutments simultaneously towards or from each other. The plates 26, 36 also carry lugs 22, 32 supported by links 30, 20, the joints of the lugs with the link 30 being provided with adjustable springs to maintain them by friction in set angular positions. The links 20 are pivoted to lugs 16 on the base 10. Between the plates and the fore-part of the pad are insertions 38 curved transversely of the pad to allow rock of the fore-part; and at the shank and heel an insertion 52 bulged to press the sides of the shank firmly against the shoe upper. Straps 46, 56 secure the pad. Specification 408,953 is referred to.
