[Class 17 (i)] In a machine for pressing shoe bottoms, especially intended for sole laying, the pressure applying pad is of solid rubber and comprises a block for engaging the fore-part of the shoe bottom, a separate block for engaging the heel end portion, and a plurality of separate blocks for engaging the shank portion. All these blocks are supported on an underlying water-filled bag. The shank sections are shaped to apply pressure only at the opposite marginal portions of the shank. Flat metal plates are provided under the fore-part of the shoe bottom. A cover of leather backed by rubber is provided. The pad box is of the kind described in Specifications 408,682 and 408,953, and comprises a water-filled bag surmounted by a fore-part pad 18, shank pads 28, 30 and a heel end pad 26. Preferably, the fore-part pad has hard rubber at its toe portion and softer rubber under the outer side of the shoe. The pad may be covered .by one or two superposed metal plates 44. A plate 50 of triangular shape may be inserted from the toe end. The shank blocks comprise seven pairs of blocks, each pair being housed in a box 32 of thin metal. The blocks are spaced apart by low blocks 34, and are shaped to engage the marginal portions of the shank. The heel block and shank blocks are retained by a member 40. The leather and rubber cover 62 is retained by a masking plate 56 and clips at the heel end. A thimble 80, secured to the cover by lugs, projects into a hole in the fore part pad. By moving one or both spacing members 34 to the outer side of the rubber blocks, the groove between the blocks may be adjusted for a narrow-shanked shoe.
