A pad for a shoe press for the cement attachment of crepe rubber soles, which will accommodate itself to the contours of the tread surface of both right and left shoes whether or not the sole includes a heel, has a lateral gash 41 in the diaphragm 25 where the line of the heel breast would come if the shoe were properly located in the press on the pad, and the waist and heel parts are formed by a flexible membrane 39. Two blocks 29, 31 of hard sponge rubber attached to the underside of the diaphragm are of approximately the depth of the metallic pad box 3, to flanges 9 on upstanding sides 7 of which the diaphragm 25 is bolted. The box 3 contains a fluid 5, preferably water, and, in order to provide for the greater displacement necessary to press the diaphragm 25 against the sole when a heel is provided, perforations or chambers open to the fluid 5 may be formed in the block 29. The box 3 has a filling hole closed by a screw stopper 21, and may be supported in the press by either of two pairs of pinions 15, 17 selected to bring the centre of the sole lengthwise between pressure abutments of the machine. Power mechanism by which the pressure applying unit is raised is so arranged as to cause the shoe and sole to be pressed together for a very short time only. Undesirable distention of the membrane 39 at the ends of the gash 41 when dealing with heeled shoes is avoided by providing an overlay of canvas-backed rubber on the pad.
