Abstract
541,007. Preserving fruit. TOMKINS, R. G. Dec. 18, 1939, No. 32468. [Class 49] Fruit is preserved by the superficial application thereto of a solution of a non-drying fatty oil, e.g. castor oil, in association with a resin, e.g. shellac, or oleoresin, a balsam, an acid derived from oil, a higher aliphatic alcohol or an ester of a higher fatty acid or a hydrocarbon of high boiling point, the proportion of oil being substantially greater than the proportion of resin &c. and the solution such that a waxy or greasy film is formed on the fruit. The solvent may be alcohol, preferably in the form of rectified spirit, and the proportions of, say, castor oil and shellac relative to the solvent may be 5 to 10 per cent. oil and 2¢ to 5 per cent. shellac. Small quantities of benzoic acid and acetic acid may be included in the composition.
