Abstract

Compositions for cleaning metal prior to painting or otherwise coating include agents for removing rust, agents for removing oil and grease, a soap-like glucoside of vegetable origin, and preferably an unsaturated mono-carboxylic acid. For example, a composition to be diluted with water before use is made by mixing 69.5 lb. of 75 per cent o-phosphoric acid, 17 lb. of mono-butyl- and/or mono-ethyl-ether of ethylene glycol and/or ethyl methyl ketone, 1.0 lb. of saponin, 0.5 lb. of oleic acid, and 12 lb. of water which may contain dextrin, molasses or other sugary matter to increase the viscosity. Linoleic, ricinoleic, acrylic, or crotonic acid may replace the oleic acid wholly or in part.
