Abstract

A drawing compound for sheet metal consists essentially of the following components in the quantities indicated in per cent by weight of the compound: 15 to 75% of a water-soluble soap which is a sodium, potassium, or amine rosin soap, or a sodium or potassium soap of a fat or fatty acid or a mixture of such fats or acids whose titre does not exceed 30 DEG C., or an amine soap of fatty acids whose titre does not exceed 30 DEG C., or a mixture of said fatty acids, and mixtures of the foregoing soaps, in which at least 10% by weight is rosin soap; 0 to 15% of an organic fluid which is dimethyl sulphoxide, a glycol, an ether of a glycol, a mixture of glycols, a mixture of ethers of glycols or a mixture of glycols and ethers of glycols; 0 to 12% of water; the balance being an oil having a maximum viscosity of 4000 SUS at 100 DEG F., which oil is aliphatic oil (which term includes fatty oils), napthenic oil or mixtures of said oils with or without aromatic type oil, the aromatic type oil not exceeding 50% by weight of the total oil, which oil may be chlorinated. The rosin soaps may be made by saponification with an aqueous alkali such as sodium or potassium carbonate or hydroxide, or triethanolamine, of rosins such as wood rosin, gum rosin, tall oil rosin, hydrogenated rosin or polymerized rosin. The fatty acid soaps may likewise be made from natural oils and fats such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, tall oil fatty acids, coconut fatty acids, or acids derived from corn, soya or bean oils. The compositions may also contain chlorinated paraffin, unsaponified rosins and fatty acids, and free triethanolamine. The oil used may be sulphurized.
