Abstract
A paper maker's size to control absorption and spread of ink applied to the paper sheet is made by adding a major amount of a hydrogenated animal fat of titre 45 DEG -61 DEG C. or of a mixture of a major amount of such hydrogenated animal fat and a minor amount of a hydrogenated vegetable fat or oil of titre 45 DEG -70 DEG C. with a minor amount of a saponified 8-22 carbon atom animal, marine animal or vegetable fat or oil or fatty acid or tall oil to an aqueous preparation of casein, ammonia and an alkali such as sodium hydroxide, and heating the mixture. For incorporating with the pulp in paper making, the composition is dispersed in water, e.g. a 10% total solids preparation is made. Production of the composition is exemplified by adding 10 parts of hydrogenated beef tallow of titre 57 DEG C. and 3 parts of beef tallow fatty acids to 1 part of a premix of 7,1 parts of water, 0,74 parts of sodium hydroxide and 1,01 parts of 26 DEG B<\>ae ammonia and heating the mixture until the total solids content is 60-68%.
