Abstract

904,246. Rectifying; phase shifting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 16, 1961 [March 23, 1960], No. 10315/60. Class 38 (2). In a circuit comprising a semi-conductorcontrolled rectifier 1 in series with a load 2 and an A.C. source 4 firing pulses are derived from a phase-shifting network including a resistive and a reactive component, one of which is variable to vary the phase and hence instant of firing of the rectifier. As shown, a phaseshifting bridge has two arms comprising high value resistors 8, 9, and two low impedance arms, namely a capacitor 6 and a variable resistor 7. The diagonal comprises the primary winding of a transformer having a saturable core and a secondary winding to provide the pulses. Variation of resistor 7 controls the firing instant over 180 degrees. A small resistor 10 minimizes resonance effects when the resistance 7 is zero. In an alternative arrangement the resistive and reactive components are connected to ends of a centre-tapped transformer and a single high value resistor is used. The reactive component may be inductive and may be variable.
