Abstract

979,814. Phase shifting. ELECTRIC CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 31726/61. Heading H2F. A phase shifting network comprises a bridge ABCD the arms CD, DB being equal resistors or inductors 26, 28, the arm BA being an inductor or capacitor, and the arm CA being resistive and comprising a full wave bridge of diodes 20 in series with a transistor 22. Output is derived across the diagonol DA on lines 12, 14, and by controlling the transistor by a signal on lines 24 the resistance of the arm CA and hence the phase shift may be varied. As shown, the inductors 26, 28 are the halves of a centre tapped secondary winding of an input transformer. In alternative arrangements the capacitor 16 may be replaced by an inductor, and the emitter and base connections of the transistor may be interchanged. The output at 12, 14 may feed a transformer having a centre tapped secondary winding, and may control a thyratron or S.C.R. As shown in Fig. 6, three similar circuits may be combined to provide phase shifting for all the phases of a three-phase supply by controlling a single common transistor. The pairs of windings 26, 28, 26<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>11</SP>, 28<SP>11</SP>, may be windings on a three-phase transformer or windings of a three-phase generator.
