Abstract

A plastic composition pressure moulded under high temperature and pressure is formed by adding a mixture containing by weight not less than 5% of a water soluble binding agent and not less than 4% of a vapour pressure controlling agent to wood chips, shavings, fibres or comminuted fibrous vegetable matter having a moisture content of 9% to 25%. The vapour pressure controlling agent may be an organic compound such as vegetable substances containing starch, protein and cellulose, animal protein, and solutions of sugar, glycerine or glycols and solutions of salts such as NaCl or CaCl2. Fatty acids and a resin acid such as tall oil may also be added. Aqueous solutions of synthetic resins such as alkaline condensed phenol or cresol resins are used as binding agents and the tall oil addition may be made by spraying it hot, or as a solution in an organic solvent or as an aqueous emulsion containing an alkali soap.
