Abstract

Light-weight concrete is produced by moulding and drying an aqueous admixture of Portland cement, an inorganic calcium salt, sodium silicate and pretreated fibrous cellulosic material, the cellulosic material being pretreated by saponification with alkali metal hydroxide, washing and drying. A mixture of calcium carbonate and calcium chloride may be employed as calcium salt. The concrete products may be cured by subjecting them to a heating and cooling cycle to a maximum temperature of 180 DEG F. for several hours.ALSO:Cellulosic fibres are treated for use as concrete additives (see Div. C1) by saponification with alkali metal hydroxide, washing, and drying free of surplus moisture; the resulting fibres are substantially pure cellulose. The process is applicable to crude or partially refined fibres such as sugar cane bagasse, branches and leaves of trees and plants, bamboo and wood shavings, and hemp fibres. The fibres may be cut up, and then boiled with an aqueous solution of NaOH containing 1 - 3 lbs NaOH per 50 gallons water for 10 - 30 mins; the floating foam is skimmed off, the fibres rinsed with water, pressed, and then further dried, e.g. by warm air, to 5 - 20% moisture content.
