Abstract
A rosin is reacted with 4À5% to 8% of its weight of formaldehyde and/or acetaldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid or an organosulphonic acid having 1 to 10 carbon atoms at a temperature between the melting point of the rosin and 225 C., the reaction mixture is maintained at this temperature for at least 10 minutes, the catalyst is neutralized with a basic material, the mixture again maintained at the elevated temperature for at least 10 minutes, and then the product is blended with an amount of unreacted rosin such that the blend contains from 2% to 4% of the aldehyde in reacted form based on the total weight of the rosin. The blend may be further reacted with an [alpha],#-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride in an amount of 0À25% to 8% by weight of the blend, by heating at 160 to 220 C. The products are saponified to form size and made into aqueous pastes for use in the manufacture of paper. In examples tall oil rosin and wood rosin are reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid and sulphuric acid, the catalysts being neutralized with sodium hydroxide and blended with unreacted rosin some of the blends are further reacted with fumaric acid size pastes are obtained by saponification of the blends (whether or not reacted with fumaric acid) with sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.
