[Class 88 (ii)] In ordinary upright or miniature overstrung under-damper action pianos, in order that the break on the strike line between the shortest bass section string and the longest treble section string may be reduced or even rendered unnecessary, an over-damper action is provided for the longest string or the several longest strings of the treble section. As shown in Fig. 1, over-dampers 9 are fitted to the three longest strings 1 of the treble section and under-dampers 7, 8 are fitted respectively to the bass strings 2 and to the fourth and fifth treble strings. The over-dampers are operated from the sustaining pedal by a rod 16 extending upwards from one of the series of damper bodies 15 of the action and cranked at its upper end 17 to lie behind extensions 18 fixed to the heads of the over-dampers. For operating the over-dampers from the keys, the overdampers are carried on levers which are actuated by upward pressure from the rear ends of the keys upon secondary or intervening levers ; or the secondary levers may be disposed below the keys and the levers carrying the over-dampers then operated by pushrods moved by the keys. The longest bass string may be placed so that it extends substantially between opposite corners of the piano. Specifications 462,497 and 529,845 are referred to.
