Pianofortes combined with other keyboard stringed instruments; silencing; keyboards; actions.-In a pianoforte having means, also operable from the keyboard, for plucking as well as striking the strings, either the plectra or the hammers being capable of being rendered inoperative,. the plectra 16 mounted on arms 18 connected to the cross-rail 25 by blade-springs 27, are operated through adjustable buttons 19 on the raising of the usual dampers 21 by the keys 1. The rail 25 may be moved longitudinally either by a controlbar, thus putting the plectra out of action by removing the buttons 19 from the action of the dampers, or by a pedal or knee-lever to regulate the intensity. The hammers 5 may be rendered inoperative by raising the actions 4 from the pilots 2 by means of a rod 15, which turns an arm 12 acting on a bar 10 pivoted at 11<1>, springs 14 attached to the keys 1 being depressed by the front part of the bar 10 to prevent the forward ends of the keys from dropping.
