Abstract
539,986. Aircraft with rotary wing systems. SPAGNOLO, A. April 6, 1940, No. 6265. [Class 4] The blades of a rotating wing system are hinged at their roots and are supported at points along their length by rigid or telescopic members to a ring which is supported directly on the fuselage and to which the driving effort is applied. As shown, the wings 4 are pivoted at 5 to a central hub and are connected at points 6 to rods 7 moving in cylinders 8 under control of springs 10. The cylinders 8 are carried on a ring 9 supported by horizontal and vertical rollers on the fuselage and engaged by a pinion or roller 15 driven by an engine 13. A separate engine 16 and propeller 17 is used for forward motion. Fig. 5 shows an alternative mounting permitting the blades to be cyclically adjusted in pitch to control the balance of the aircraft. The blades 4 are connected to tubes 24 secured to the ring 9, and ailerons 20 on the blades are actuated by arms 22, rods 23 passing through the tubes 24, and bell cranks 27 having rollers 29 running in a groove in a ring 31 which can be set eccentrically in any horizontal direction by the pilot. Alternatively the ailerons 20 may be controlled by a tiltable swashplate.
