Abstract

745,344. Controlling jet-propelled aircraft. ZBOROWSKI, H. P. G. A. R. VON. Oct. 3, 1951 [Oct. 4, 1950], No. 22995/51. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] An aircraft has an annular tunnel-shaped wing and a propelling power plant in which said wing is the only main aerodynamic supporting surface of the aircraft and is in the form of a body of revolution about a rectilinear axis forming the fore-and-aft axis of the aircraft, the sections of the wing by planes containing said axis being in the form of aerofoils, the power plant being arranged to give a thrust along or thrusts evenly balanced about said fore-and-aft axis, means being provided for exerting an aerodynamic control action in a direction transverse to said axis. An annular wing 1 carries inwardly directed arms 5 to locate a body or fuselage 4 and a turbo-jet engine 8 and flaps 7 are located around the periphery of the body for radial displacement whereby a control effect may be exerted on the aircraft. In other embodiments the flaps may be mounted on an auxiliary aerofoil forward of the body or on the inner or outer surface of the wing 1 or a single auxiliary annular control surface may be mounted ahead of the fuselage with universal freedom of movement. Alternative power plant arrangements comprise an engine driving two contra-rotating propellers in which hot gases from the engine may be used to heat the air flowing through the propeller disc and ram jet units located within the annular space formed by the inner and outer wing surfaces.
