539,274. Electric indicating systems. KAPELLA, Ltd., REASON, R. E., and GARROD, R. I. Feb. 1, 1940, No. 1981. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (i)] Modifications of the arrangements described in Specification 539,271 for measuring and indicating surface roughness are described, and their application is extended to the measurement of pressures, small mechanical movements and ordinary gauging. The modifications relate to alternative means for obtaining full scale deflection of the instruments for a small range of movement of the controlling stylus which by means of a pick-up which modulates or controls the amplitude of the output of a source of A.C. For this purpose, the percentage modulation of the A.C. is controlled by combining with the output of the pick-up an opposing A.C. voltage of adjustable amplitude. The opposing A.C. voltage may be derived from a similar pick-up in which the stylus is replaced by a manually adjusted armature, or it may be derived directly from the source and phase opposition of the two voltages or may be obtained by phase shifting networks. These arrangements may be used in conjunction with the "backing off" arrangement described in the above-mentioned Specification. The Provisional Specification describes also a mixer valve for combining the modulated and unmodulated A.C. in varying proportions and a cathode ray shadow indicator to indicate the proportions.
