640,768. Determining physical quantities of materials. CAMBRIDGE INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and JESSOP, G. Aug. 13, 1948, No. 21448. [Class 37] Apparatus for the polarographic analysis of solutions in which a constant, small A.C. voltage is superposed on the normal D.C. voltage, thus producing a current consisting of the normal D.C. current giving a curve comprising a series of sloping steps, and an A.C. current whose magnitude is substantially constant except for sharp peaks corresponding to the middle of the steps in the D.C. curve is characterized in the use of phase-sensitive means for determining the magnitude of the peak A.C. current over the residual A.C. The current from a polarographic cell B supplied with D.C. from source A and A.C. from source D is fed through an A.C. amplifier E to an interrupter F operating at the same frequency as the A.C., whose phase is controlled by an impedance network H and is adjusted to be substantially in phase with the A.C. supply, whereby the residual A.C. which is out-ofphase with the applied volts is eliminated from the readings of a meter G, and only the inphase current is measured. The interrupter F may be replaced by other means for phase selection and rectification.
