Abstract
618,003. Speed indicators. FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd., MILSOM, F. R., KANTOROWICZ, O. P. T., and SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Oct. 11, 1946, No. 30458. [Class 40 (i)] An electric tachometer comprises a conductor 10 rotated by the device whose speed is to be measured, a field magnet 15 having a winding 17 excited from an A.C. source, and a pick-up magnet 18 having a winding 21 in which is induced a voltage dependent upon the speed of the rotating conductor. The magnets are so disposed that the magnetic field between the poles of the field magnet 15 traverses the conductor and the interpolar space of the pick-up magnet 18 and when the conductor disc 10 is stationary the voltage induced in magnet 18 is substantially zero. When the conductor 10 is rotated at a speed within the operative range of the instrument, a further voltage, 90 degrees out of phase, is induced in the winding of the pick-up magnet which voltage is substantially proportional to the speed of rotation of the conductor. This voltage may be applied to a voltmeter calibrated in speed or may be used to control the speed in known manner. In view of the phase difference between the residual voltage and the voltage induced by rotation, a wattmeter arrangement or valve amplifier or the like may be used to pick up the voltage dependent on the speed. The valve amplifier, Fig. 4, comprises two valves 31, 32 with their anode-cathode circuits fed in parallel through the centre-tapped primary winding of a transformer 33, from the A.C. source between terminals 34 and 35 which supplies the field magnet 15. Phase-adjusting means 36 may be provided. Voltage from the pick-up winding 21 is fed through a transformer 37 to the grids of valves 31, 32 and the means 36 are adjusted until the phase of the anode current is substantially the same as that of the voltage to be selected, i.e. the voltage produced by rotation of disc 10. Means, such as a pin-and-slot arrangement, are provided to enable adjustment of pick-up magnet 18 relative to field magnet 15. The disc 10 may be replaced by a cup-shaped conductor, with corresponding modification in the arrangement of magnets. Various forms of magnet windings may be used, and temperature compensation means may be provided.
