Abstract
629,545. Measuring modulation. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION, and HILL, A. H. Dec. 13, 1946, No. 36897. [Class 40 (v)] A modulation meter comprises means for applying a voltage representative of the peak amplitude of the unmodulated carrier in series opposition to a fixed voltage of equal value, and means for measuring the overall voltage which appears when the carrier is modulated. The invention facilitates modulation measurements when the carrier is modulated asymmetrically. In Fig. 5, the unmodulated carrier is applied to coil L<1>, and by adjustment of the input coupling or the tapping on resistance R<5>, a fixed voltage equal to the rectified carrier voltage produced across resistance R1 is connected in series opposition. When the carrier is modulated, a second rectifying system V<2>, R3, C<4>, produces a voltage across condenser C<4>, which is measured by means of a valve voltmeter V<3>, R<4>, M. Meter M can be calibrated to indicate the degree of modulation which is then measured relative to the unmodulated carrier level and not the average modulated carrier level.
