Abstract
537,742. Stapling continuous filaments. COURTAULDS, Ltd., ASHTON, H., MORTON, E. A., and HARDACRE, W. Jan. 3, 1940, No. 150. [Class 120 (iii)] A tow of continuous filaments is formed into a draftable sliver of staple fibres by passing it between the cylindrical surfaces of a pair of hardened non-resilient rigidly mounted rollers which are rotated at substantially equal speeds and arranged so that the distance between the nip of the rollers is a small fraction of the thickness of the tow which is thus highly compressed and gripped over an appreciable length in the nip, the tow being confined in the nip by guides and being cut into fibres of equal length by helical V-shaped cutting ridges which are arranged on one of the rollers at an angle of between 5 degrees and 15 degrees to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the roller and which touch the surface of the other roller in the nip. As shown the rollers are arranged to cut six tows, each tow being confined by cylindrical ridges 10 on the plane roller 5 engaging cylindrical grooves 16 in the cutting roller 4 having the helical V-shaped cutting ridges 9. Each tow is guided to the nip of the rollers by pegs 17 spaced apart a distance less than that between adjacent ridges 10 so that none of the filaments enter the grooves 16 and is fed by rollers 3 rotating with a peripheral speed less than that of the rollers 4, 5. The sliver of cut fibres is removed from the roller 5 by a funnel 12 provided with an acute-angled edge fitting against the roller and is led away by a conveyer 14 for further treatment. Specifications 275,540, [Class 120 (iii)], 511,867, and 535,793 are referred to.
