Abstract
535,737. Differential gearing. MERCIER, P. E. Oct. 17, 1939, Nos. 28050, 28051 and 28052. Convention dates, Jan. 26, March 25 and June 6, Addition to 508,446. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Gear for driving co-axial airscrew shafts in opposite directions, from a motor-shaft in line with the airscrew shafts, without any reaction couple and with balanced torque as described in the parent Specification, has the symmetrically arranged trains of gears modified to give gearreduction ratios of two or more. In one form, straight toothed gearing similar to that described in the parent Specification is modified by connecting the internally toothed gears to the driving-shaft and casing and the planet carriers to the two propeller shafts. Fig. 2 shows a driving shaft 1 connected to a bevel wheel geared to planet pinions 44 on a carrier 42 connected to one airscrew shaft 9, the pinions 44 also gearing with a double pinion 45, freely mounted, and gearing with planet pinions 47 on a carrier 46 connected to the other airscrew shaft 8, the planet pinions 47 gearing also with a fixed pinion 49. This gives a gear ratio of 4. By inclining the axes of the pinions 44, 47 and increasing or reducing the diameter of the double pinion 45 the gear ratio may be increased or reduced. Fig. 4 shows gearing having a reduction ratio of 2. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement of gears in which the sun pinions are connected to the two airscrew shafts and the planet gears 74, 75 are mounted on the same carrier which can rotate freely. An equivalent mechanism involving bevel gears also is described. Fig. 7 shows a mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but with compound planet gears. The engine shaft 91 drives a sun pinion 99 gearing with a planet pinion 105 mounted upon the same shaft as a larger pinion 107 which gears with an internally toothed gear 109 connected to one airscrew shaft 8. The corresponding internally toothed gear 110 of the other train is connected to the other airscrew shaft 9 and the sun pinion 104 is fixed. To absorb shock the pinions 105, 107 may be coupled by a torsionally flexible rod 108, as also may the pinions of the corresponding train. The planet pinions are carried by a casing 93 mounted on bearings in the fixed casing.
