Abstract
962,152. Differential gear. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO. Ltd. July 8, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23679/59. Heading F2D. A transmission device for driving two contra-rotating rotors 24 from a turbine 11 comprises a sun pinion 13 driven by a shaft 12 coupled to the turbine, the pinion 13 being geared to an annulus gear 14 through a series of planet gears 18. The gear 14 is connected through splines 15 to a sleeve 16 carrying a gear 17, the planet carrier 19 being connected to a sleeve 21 rotatable within the sleeve 16 and carrying a gear 22. The gears 17, 22 mesh respectively with gears 28, 29 fixed to concentric hollow shafts 27, 26 each supporting a propeller 24. The turbine exhaust from a pipe 30 passes through the shaft 27. In a modified device, Fig. 2, the gears 17, 22 are positioned on opposite sides of the epicyclic gear 13, 14, 18 and the shafts 26, 27 function as lay shafts driving through pinions propeller shafts coaxial with the shaft 12. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the shafts 26, 27 are parallel to each other but are not coaxial. To ensure a positive direction of rotation on starting the torques on the sleeves 16, 21 are different and accordingly to ensure that the output torques at the shafts 26, 27 are equal the gears 17, 22 and 28, 29 are of different ratios. According to another modified device (not shown) the annulus gear is omitted and the epicyclic gear comprises two run pinions meshing with two planet pinions rigid with one another and of slightly different size, the planet carrier and one of the sun pinions being connected to the shafts 26, 27 through the gears 17, 22 and 28, 29 while the remaining sun gear is connected to the shaft 12.
