Abstract

535,591. Magnetic compasses. SPERRY PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 12, 1939, No. 27783. Convention date, June 10. [Class 97 (ii)] In a magnetic compass mounted in a craft the magnetic meridian-seeking member of pre-determined magnetic strength is constructed with pre-determined moments of inertia about its horizontal and vertical axes, the inertia about its vertical axis being much larger than that about a horizontal axis in order to eliminate or diminish the northerly turning error. As shown the compass comprises a container 10 having a cover 12 and transparent side wall 13 forming a fluid chamber within which is supported the sensitive element 15 consisting of a float 14, pivot 16, magnets 17, central plate 18 and outer rim 19 with a number of radial vanes 20. The vanes 20 are supported vertically so that they enclose a body of liquid between them laterally, but present no obstruction to the liquid vertically. An expansion chamber 30 may be provided in the usual manner. Specification 522,436 is referred to.
