Abstract

507,889. Magnetic compasses. BOYSEN, J., KUHLMANN, O., and PLATH, T. C. Dec. 21, 1938, No. 37102. [Class 97 (ii)] The pivot for the card of a liquid magnetic compass is suspended in an intermediate ring 10 by a gimbal system, the axes of which intersect substantially in the plane of the card, and the ring 10 is suspended in a carrier 4 from an axis 8-8<1>, above the plane of the card and transverse to the supporting craft, both the card and the gimbal system being immersed in the damping liquid. The carrier 4 may be resiliently mounted in the outer casing 1 containing the damping liquid by springs 6. Damping vanes 18, 19 may be mounted on the bracket 14 carrying the card pivot. In a modification, the bracket 14 may be replaced either by a closed vessel enclosing the card and communicating with the outer casing 1 through one or more small apertures or by two horizontal damping surfaces interconnected by distance pieces.
