Abstract

506,582. Resilient mountings. HILLIER, A. (Sperry Gyroscope Co., Inc.) Oct. 25, 1937, No. 29052. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XX and XIX] An instrument, such as a magnetic or gyroscopic compass, is resiliently supported by a universally mounted member and is restrained from rotation about a vertical axis by means which permit other possible modes of motion. As shown, the instrument 6 is suspended by resilient mountings 7, 7', 8, 8<1>, from a ring 4 which pivots on an axis 5-5 in a ring 2 pivoting in turn about a perpendicular horizontal axis 3-3 in the binnacle 1. 27, 28 are friction dampers. Each resilient mounting comprises a shaft 12 secured at the ends to the centres of rubber discs 9, 91 which are supported at their peripheries by metal plates 10, 10<1>, secured respectively to the ring 4 and the spider 16 carrying the instrument 6. Dashpots may be provided between the ring 4 and spider 16. An anti-twist ring 17 is attached to the ring 4 by a pair of opposite spring metal brackets 18, 18<1> and to the spider 16 by.opposite brackets 21 fixed to the spider 16 and attached to the centre of wires 19 arranged as parallel chords on the ring 17.
