Abstract

533,808. Heating by chemical action. FRANCIS, H. Nov. 28, 1939, No. 30973. [Class 64 (ii)] Heat is obtained by the reaction of potassium permanganate and glycerine. The reaction may be retarded by the addition of powdered silica or finely ground sand, or accelerated by the addition of aluminium or iron filings. In the application to a heating pad for use in hair waving, a mixture of equal parts of potassium permanganate and silica or sand is placed in an envelope of aluminium foil, one surface of which is perforated but covered on its outer side with removable impervious material such as greaseproof paper or cellulose film or with a non- removable absorbent sheet such as cellulose tissue or absorbent paper. If the impervious covering is used, it is removed before the pad is used and a covering of absorbent cellulose tissue backed by grease- or water-proofed paper is applied. The activating liquid consists of glycerine 3 parts and water 1 part by weight, and this is applied to the absorbent covering from which it filters through the metal foil. The envelope may alternatively be of tin, brass or copper foil, or wholly or partly of paper. One side may be of foil and the other side of perforated impervious paper with a covering of absorbent paper or wholly of absorbent paper. Alternatively, both sides may be of paper, one side being impervious, and the other perforated and covered with an absorbent sheet, and made of absorbent paper.
