538,948. Heating by chemical action. UNITED STATES APPLIANCE CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1939, No. 32545. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 64 (ii)] A chemical solution for use with an exothermic hair-waving pad of the kind described in Specifications 501,886 and 537,247 employs copper nitrate to re-act with metallic aluminium. Activating salts which provide a chloride ion may also be added, e.g. ammonium, copperammonium, aluminium, sodium or potassium chlorides. Examples of such compositions are (1) copper nitrate 29 grams, copper ammonium chloride 10 grams, water up to 96 c.c.; (2) copper nitrate 40 grams, ammonium chloride 9 grams, water up to 96 c.c. The solution becomes neutral or slightly alkaline at the end of the reaction. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the pad comprises a number of absorbent sheets 10b of asbestos paper or blotting paper with interposed sheets 10c of aluminium foil. The assembly of sheets is perforated. The outer wrapper comprises aluminium foil 13 lined with parchment paper 14, with inner sheets 16 of " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark) and 17 of paper towelling. The assembly is folded as shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled), and then again about the line 23. When required for use, the pad is opened to the position shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled), and the chemical solution is applied by a syringe 26, whereby it is absorbed by the absorbent sheets and reacts with the aluminium to generate heat. The pad is bent over a curler on which the hair to be treated has been wound. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
