Abstract

554,151. Heating by chemical action. FRANCIS, H. April 10, 1942, No. 4749. [Class 64 (ii)] A chemical heating pad for use in permanent waving of hair contains mainly a mixture of copper oxide and aluminium granules, the latter coated with sulphonated castor oil to retard the rate of heating when an activating liquid is added. The mixture preferably contains also potassium chloride or sulphonated lorol to attract moisture, and a small proportion of silica. The activating liquid may be a solution of sodium or ammonium chloride. An example comprises copper oxide 75 parts, aluminium granules 25 parts, silica 1 part, sulphonated lorol .001 part. The pad contains a larger quantity of composition than is necessary for a single operation, so that it can be activated successively by adding more liquid. The composition is placed in a porous paper bag or between paper sheets in a bag of textile material having a woolly surface inside and smooth surface outside. One surface of the bag is covered by aluminium foil. In use, the pad is laid in the liquid in a shallow saucer, with the absorbent face downwards, and is then applied to the hair.
