Abstract
617,255. Heating by chemical action and molecular combination. GIFFORD, E. L. Feb. 16, 1946, No. 4939. [Class 64(ii)] In a hair-waving pad or sachet of the kind containing chemicals that when caused to come into contact with an activating agent in the presence of water react to evolve heat, the chemicals and the activator are held by means which prevent their inter-action before the addition of water to the pad or sachet. A sheet of porous material impregnated with the activator (ammonium chloride or bromide), an inner envelope of absorbent paper containing the chemicals (aluminium and cuprous oxide), and an intermediate sheet of untreated porous material, are contained in an outer envelope. This outer envelope may be of absorbent paper with a synthetic resin finish to give strength when wet and has one face perforated and the other backed with metal foil or other heatresisting substance. The aluminium is granular and coated with a water insoluble substance such as stearic acid, petroleum jelly, lanoline or paraffin wax whilst the cuprous oxide is powdered and mixed with inert fillers such as China clay, talc, titanium oxide and aluminium oxide.
