Abstract

A composition for destroying animal and insect pests by liberation of hydrogen sulphide in contact with moisture comprises an uncoated pulverulent mixture of a metallic sulphide such as iron, magnesium or calcium sulphide and a solid acid constituent such as sodium bisulphate, sodium bicarbonate, or tartaric, citric, or oxalic acid. When commercial sodium bisulphate is used, free acid therein may be neutralized by addition of lime or magnesia, and to provide for use in dry conditions a hygroscopic substance such as phosphorus pentoxide or fused calcium chloride may be included. To control rate of release of hydrogen sulphide, an inert material such as petroleum or other hydrocarbon oil may be added, and such addition also prevents caking. The composition may be stored in air-tight containers.
