Abstract
A desiccant for use in removing moisture from refrigerating apparatus &c. comprises a desiccant material, e.g. anhydrous calcium sulphate, which is coated and enclosed by a moisture-permeable enclosing membrane such as cellulose acetate. The cellulose acetate is preferably dissolved in acetone to give a 15 per cent solution, and this solution is applied directly to the calcium sulphate, which may be in the form of lumps, grains or powder, the mixture being thereafter moulded and finally coated with cellulose acetate. Alternatively, powdered calcium sulphate is mixed with an equal amount of ground cellulose acetate, the mixture being moulded under heat and pressure and the resultant moulded element being coated with cellulose acetate.
