602,422. Drying air. PIERCE FOUNDATION, Inc., J. B. Oct. 18, 1945, No. 27377. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1944. [Class 34(i)] A desiccant device comprises a comminuted mass of calcium chloro compound 11, (calcium chloro - hydrosilicate, or calcium chloro hydro-aluminate), in a moisture pervious container of transparent material 12 suspended in supporting wires or tapes 14. Protuberances 15 of cellulose acetate or similar material are fixed at intervals over the surface of the container 12 by a suitable adhesive for the purpose of collecting liquid calcium chloride hydrates which are given off by the desiccant towards the end of its useful life when the moisture absorption is approximately 90 per cent. The liquid calcium chloride collects on the protuberances 15 where it loses water by evaporation and solidifies, and is then prevented from falling into the packing container or on to the articles being dried. Ferric chloride may be added to the desiccant substance to act as an indicator of the extent of moisture absorption. The indicator may be inspected and also compared with a reference chart 16 comprising strips 17, 18 coloured to match the desiccant when dry and when exhausted. U.S.A.
