Abstract

533,101. Inner tubes for tyres. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1939, No. 27423. Convention date, Oct. 29,1938. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Inner tubes are made by shortening one ply of a length of flattened unvulcanized rubber tubing, the ply to be shortened being also thinner, splicing the ends of the tubing to produce an endless tube with the shortened ply on the inner circumference thereof, distending the endless tube and vulcanizing the tube while it is distended. The spliced tube 16 is placed on a former 17 having a grooved perimeter and a slot 21 for the valve stem 15. The top portion 18 is then bolted on, the turned down portion 22 of the tube is pressed up to the dotted position and the tube is gradually inflated so that the thicker outer portion becomes thinner and finally is of approximately the same thickess as the inner portion. The tube is then removed from the former and vulcanized in a press.
